So I saw Modest Mouse last night from about the sixth row of people at a sold out show at Stubb's and im convinced that im now an indie and punk rock fan. those are the two genres that have excited me most over the past year or two and ive lost almost all contact with the mainstream, except for the bands i still have a nostalgic attachment to. i think this may be because i lived with chris marr and jeremy elliott last year. chris knows everything about everyone and is primarily responsible for my interest in punk (we're talking early punk as in the sex pistols, the clash, and even before that with iggy pop and the stooges and velvet undergound), and jeremy is a bad ass musician who is into indie bands like modest mouse and built to spill, especially.
this realization makes me realize how much my musical horizons (among others) have broadened since ive been at college. when i arrived i was the biggest alt-rock fan. the foofighters, stp, and pearl jam were the best bands around. and i still love them, but since ive been living with 20+ guys at school each semester for 6 semesters, ive been introduced and seduced by pink floyd, phish, interpol, the white stripes, and bts to name a few and those have joined the ranks of my personal fave's or even replaced the afforementioned bands from my high school days. and i could turn this into a long post about how much college changes an individuals personality overall, i'll just end with the thought that i think this musical transformation is a metaphor for how one experiences change because of whom he encounters in college.
I can't believe you left out Wesley Willis. Unbelievable.
